Emergency Shelters
These are easy to construct, and can be made quickly with minimal cost. Styrofoam coolers are usually recycled or thrown away, so they may be found cheaply or for free. The ideal size is around 16" x 24" x 16" tall.
Either one or two holes are cut or drilled into it. A second hole provides an escape path if the cats encounter any predators, but it will not hold the heat as well. The holes are placed off to the side as shown, as this allows maximum space inside. The holes should be about 5 to 6 inches round, and can be cut with a sharp paring knife or drilled with a hole saw. Be sure to do this outside, because the styrofoam dust becomes a mess, especially if using a drill. Use compressed air or a leaf blower to clean away the dust. This is optional, but six inch plastic flower pots can be cut to make a durable entrance and awning. Because they are tapered, they can be pressed into the holes firmly. 100% silicone is then used to secure the pots.
Straw is used to provide bedding and additional warmth. Do not use hay or blankets because they will hold moisture and freeze. Spread the straw loosely across the floor to a depth of three or four inches. Then pack some around the walls to create a nest. Replace the lid and pull a contractor grade trash bag over the cooler. 42 gallon bags usually work well, but some coolers that are larger may require a 55 gallon drum liner. Cut the bag where the flower pots are located, and then fold and tape any flaps, like wrapping a present. Black all-weather duct tape is the best option, as it will last longer and look nicer.
These shelters are lightweight, so it very important to weigh them down. Rocks, bricks, pavers, plywood; anything heavy will work just fine. The best placement would be out of the wind, against a building or wall, or under thick brush or pine trees. The straw should be changed twice a year; spring and fall would be best. It is possible to do this through the doorway, but it is easier to just cut the bag for the straw change and replace with a new bag and tape.
